From what I've been told, as the years have progressed more and more young people have been attending various General Conventions. This year I have the privilege of attending General Convention as a page in the House of Deputies and a volunteer with Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation. Being on the floor in the House of Deputies is great! As the convention progresses and the House begins to debate the more important issues of Convention, and I get a front row seat. As an added bonus, I was in the House when the deputies were trying to work their voting keypads, which was some great entertainment.
Working with Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation, most of my time in the exhibit is spent promoting the Millenium Development Goals. These goals are helping to: eradicate extreme hunger & poverty; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a global partnership for development. While working as a page and a member of EGR is keeping me very busy, I'm having a blast.
From what I've been told, the Church has made great strides to making General Convention more inviting to Youth. It is an amazing experience to be able to experience the "inner workings" of the Church, and to do so with tons of other teenagers around. From being in the House of Deputies, roaming the exhibit hall, and attending daily committee hearings this has been an energizing experience and I can't believe it is just starting.
