Recital at S. Stephen’s Church in Providence

Look forward to an exceptional musical evening when James Busby gives the annual Memorial Recital at S. Stephen’s Church in Providence, along with Soprano Cheryl Medeiros-Nancarrow, violinist Peter Stickel, and cellist John Brumstead, on Sunday 19 October at 5:30 pm.

James Busby, an alumnus of The New England Conservatory, studied piano with Julius Chaloff and Kyriena Siloti and organ with George Faxon and Max Miller. He later studied with noted vocal coaches Felix Wolfes and Olga Averino, and conductor John Moriarty. While yet a student he had the unique opportunity of playing for master classes and lessons with such luminaries as Jennie Tourel and Eleanor Steber. He has worked with many conductors including Sarah Caldwell, Thomas Dunn, Erich Leinsdorf and Arthur Fiedler. Mr. Busby has been Organist and Choirmaster at S. Stephen’s Church since 1993. He is also organist for Emmanuel College, Boston.

Ms. Medeiros-Nancarrow will sing the atmospheric The Black River by British composer Gavin Bryars. The text is part of the prologue of Twenty-thousand Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne with colorful use of the organ. Ms. Medeiros-Nancarrow is an alumnus of Eastman School and New England Conservatory, sings with the Boston Lyric Opera, and is a founder of Intermezzo Chamber Opera. She hails originally from Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

Suite für Orgel, Violine und Violoncello, Op. 149 will feature Mr. Stickel on violin and Mr. Brumstead on cello. The Josef Rheinberger suite is a finely crafted work for the two strings and organ and Busby says that he “thinks of it as the organ trio Johannes Brahms didn't write.” Busby will also play Concerto IV in F by G. F. Handel, arranged by W. T. Best.
